2 rooms, 2 kids and dog. 2 night stay.||||Lovely large rooms without annoying airco. Spotlessly clean. Great food, beer and fast wifi.||||Great staff who took the trouble to provide a water bowl for hound. Delicious breakfast with local newspapers!||||Only 5km walk to Externsteinen through steep but attractive woodland

In need of a room for a night and on a budget, this hotel was one of few choices. ||||79 Euro, including breakfast, free parking. Worked for me Wireless Internet is available upon request, didn't try it though. ||||Rooms are decently sized, bathrooms alright and clean. Breakfast buffet, included, was decent, again, nothing to write home about, but for the rate you pay definitely worth to mention. ||||Would stay there again when having to find a place on a budget again.

It never happened. ||||Booked through our central booking agency (as usual with their 10% mark up somewhere in the background) when I arrived (after a four hour drive in temperatures approaching 38 degrees C) there was no room available. The hotel subsequently admitted that they had written down the date of my arrival incorrectly. ||||I wonder though - a hotel's bread and butter is looking after guests efficiently – too many of those mistakes and you find yourself out of the hotel trade.||||This one most certainly didn't look after me and I wonder if, perhaps, they had had a better offer from someone wishing to stay several days.||||The young woman in reception was embarrassed by my arrival (wondering why I had not arrived the day before) - but she could not be persuaded to find a room. She did however offer to ring another (nearby) hotel. ||||Succinct directions (all of course in German) and a five minute drive later and I could not quite believe my eyes. She had said that it was a good hotel but a little more expensive so I though FINE. I arrived to the sort of place I would never even think about thinking about!! ||||As I cannot think of anything polite to say - I will refrain. A block house of a building standing on a busy corner resplendent with neon signs, SKY signs and Billiards I had a feeling that I would be in for a treat!! A quick look at the room on offer (it must have been 35 degrees C inside) with its wavy carpets, tiny dimensions and grubby stairs saw me make my (polite) excuses and return the key.||||All in all an experience to avoid.||||The silver lining - well I phoned a Best Western hotel I stay in regularly, in a not-too-distant town, and they had a superb room for me with air con and nice clean carpets that were more closely associated with the floor.||||My advice – from recent experience – is stay with the chain hotels unless you know better. This was a stressful waste of an evening – though it did end ok.||||And a final thought – the Hirschsprung does look good on its website – so why on earth did they offer me such down-at heel alternative accommodation?
